In power transmission, communication networks, and industrial wiring systems, the long-term stable operation of cables relies on a strong and reliable protective layer. Aluminum alloy strips for cable armoring, with their core advantages of lightweight, high toughness, non-magnetic properties, and excellent corrosion resistance, are rapidly replacing traditional galvanized steel strips. They have become the mainstream armoring material for medium- and high-voltage cables, special cables, and aluminum alloy interlocked cables-providing comprehensive protection in terms of mechanical strength, electromagnetic shielding, and environmental resistance. They are a key foundational material for the upgrading of the modern cable industry.

What is Aluminum Alloy Strip for Cable Armoring?

A cable typically consists of conductor, insulation layer, bedding layer, armoring layer, and outer sheath from inside to outside. The armoring layer is located outside the bedding layer and directly withstands external mechanical stress.

Aluminum alloy strip for cable armoring is a high-precision product manufactured through cold rolling or hot rolling processes. It is specifically designed for cable and optical cable armoring layers. During cable production, the strip is longitudinally or helically wrapped around the cable to form a strong protective layer.

This "armor" not only resists external mechanical pressure, impact, and rodent damage but also provides electromagnetic shielding and leakage protection.

Armored cable aluminum strips are typically made from wrought aluminum alloys, with common grades including 5052, 5154, and 5154A:

  • 5052 Aluminum Alloy:
The most widely used material for medium- and high-voltage cables. As an Al-Mg alloy, it is non-heat-treatable, offering medium strength, excellent fatigue resistance, good plasticity, and strong corrosion resistance. It also has excellent weldability and is ideal for interlocked armoring structures formed through cold bending.

  • 5154 and Modified Alloys:
Higher magnesium content improves resistance to seawater corrosion, making them suitable for marine cables, ships, and offshore platforms.

  • 5154A Aluminum Alloy:
An upgraded version of 5154, with Mg content increased to 3.1–3.9%, providing higher tensile and yield strength. Suitable for heavy-duty cable armoring requiring superior mechanical protection.

Product Advantages

  1. Lightweight Efficiency: Aluminum density is only one-third of steel, significantly reducing cable weight, transportation cost, and installation difficulty.

  2. Non-Magnetic (No Eddy Current Loss): Unlike steel, aluminum eliminates eddy current losses in AC systems, improving current-carrying capacity and extending cable life.

  3. Excellent Corrosion Resistance: A natural oxide film provides strong resistance to moisture, chemicals, and salt spray—ideal for coastal and marine environments.

  4. Superior Flexibility: Easier bending enhances cable flexibility, enabling installation in confined or complex environments.

  5. Environmentally Friendly: Fully recyclable, free of lead and cadmium, compliant with RoHS and eco-friendly cable standards.
